Joe Biden said he regrets that he is not president in a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey, a preview of which was aired on ABC’s Good Morning America Thursday morning.
There was much speculation that the former vice president would run to succeed President Barack Obama in 2016, but eventually Biden announced he would not be challenging Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary — a candidate most saw as the shoo-in nominee.
“I regret that I am not president because I think there is so much opportunity,” Biden told Winfrey. “I think America is so incredibly well-positioned.”
Biden continued that for a candidate to run for president, they must be able to answer two questions.
“One: Do they truly believe they are the most qualified person for that moment? I believed I was,” Biden said. “But, was I prepared to be able to give my whole heart, my whole soul and all my attention to the endeavor? And I knew I wasn’t”
In 2015, as candidates began to throw their hats into the ring, Biden’s 46-year-old son Beau died from brain cancer.
In a touching appearance on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show months later, Biden opened up about the death of his son, and said he would not run for president as he did not feel he could give the job “110%.”
“I don’t regret the decision I made because it was the right decision for my family,” he told Winfrey.
