Jeff Sessions Looking at Appointing Special Counsel to Investigate Clinton Foundation
Multiple outlets are now reporting that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked top prosecutors in the Justice Department to evaluate whether a special counsel is needed to investigate the 2010 Uranium One deal and the Clinton Foundation. This comes after conservative media has been hyper-focused on the story and President Donald Trump has stated that he was frustrated that the DOJ wasn’t looking into former Secretary of State — and his 2016 presidential election rival — Hillary Clinton.
The prosecutors will examine reports of misconduct at the Clinton Foundation and the Obama administration’s 2010 decision to allow a Russian nuclear energy agency to acquire much of the United States’ uranium, among other matters, according to a letter sent to the House Judiciary Committee from a senior Justice Department official on Monday.
“These senior prosecutors will report directly to the attorney general and the deputy attorney general, as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not currently under investigation should be opened, whether any matters currently under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit a special counsel,” said the senior official, Stephen E. Boyd, an assistant attorney general.

Before leaving on his Asia trip, Trump said that he was disappointed in the Justice Department because “they should be looking at the Democrats.” Trump has expressed anger in the past that Sessions recused himself from the Russia probe, hinting to advisers that he may fire Sessions due to it. Meanwhile, in recent weeks, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has ramped up.
