Chuck Todd spoke more than seven candidates during first Democratic debate

.

MSNBC host Chuck Todd served as a moderator for only the second hour of the 2020 Democratic debate’s first night but managed to speak more than seven of the presidential candidates on stage.

With a total count of 1,633 spoken words, his camera time trailed only three of the presidential hopefuls.

The debate was moderated by five separate prominent media voices from NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo: Savannah Guthrie, Lester Holt, and José Díaz-Balart hosting the first hour and Todd and Rachel Maddow in the second.

Maddow, with 1,163 total words, spoke 470 fewer words than Todd, but still spoke more than three presidential candidates. Both Todd and Maddow faced criticism for their time spent framing and asking their questions.

Candidates with the most speaking time were Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas, with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren in a distant third. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee spoke the least of the candidates, saying fewer than 1,000 words and topping only moderators Savannah Guthrie and José Díaz-Balart.
