Ingraham Warns Trump: If You Break Immigration Promises, ‘Expect a Political Revolt From the Base’

On Wednesday night, Laura Ingraham opened her show by giving President Trump a dire warning as his administration pursues immigration reform.

The Fox News host criticized the president for “adopting the language” of the left at his televised bipartisan meeting at the White House. She even compared Trump’s “bill of love” reference to when Jeb Bush called illegal immigrants coming into the country as an “act of love,” which was something Trump ridiculed him for during the election.

Ingraham insisted that granting amnesty for all the DACA recipients would be a “hard pill to swallow” for his supporters, many of whom called into her radio show earlier that day and expressed their worries about Trump’s handling of immigration. She then accused establishment Republicans of wanting “cheap labor” and Democrats of wanting “new voters,” but she added that their goal is to “separate Donald Trump from his base and break the spirit of the populist movement.”

“The president has to remain loyal to his supporters and to his agenda, the one he ran on, the one that won all that applause and rave reviews and all those rallies where people stood in line in hours in the cold,” Ingraham said. “He has to be willing to walk away––yes, walk away from a bad deal just the way Reagan walked away from a bad deal with the Soviets at Reykjavik.”

She offered praise to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who she noted isn’t exactly a “hardliner” on immigration, for cautioning Trump to agreeing to a deal that “compounds the problem” that “only attracts more illegals down the road.” However, she was encouraged by Trump’s stance on ending the temporary status of roughly 200,000 El Salvadorian refugees who have been in the country for 20 years and the ICE crackdowns at 7-Elevens for illegal immigrants, which is the “robust, proactive enforcement” that his supporters demanded.

Ingraham told Trump to keep two things in mind; the first being that DACA is the only leverage he has on Democrats and the second being that Democrats want to legalize all illegal immigrants so that they can have “supermajorities” in all the key battleground states.

“This deal could decide the fate of the country,” Ingraham continued. I’m going to wait to see what the final DACA proposal looks like. But if it does not include a wall- a real wall, not a see through wall, expect a political revolt from the base — which means losing the House and maybe even losing the Senate. And by the way, chain migration- absolutely necessary…. He promised them a big beautiful wall. Unless chain migration is ended, I fear your most ardent supporters will write you off as just another politician who said something he didn’t mean. And that would be heartbreaking.”
